After romance and heartbreak, Kayla Wright is ready to “Settle Down” — into the music industry, that is. Wright is making her way onto the country-pop scene with her debut single, “Settle Down”, and took the time to sit down with us and talk about everything music.

With her debut album scheduled for 2026, Wright wrote many of the songs part of it last year. I was going back last summer, I had a really bad breakup-situationship thing, and I wrote a bunch of songs. I came back to them over time, and I've kind of been putting together a collection of ones that I think tell some sort of story. So, I think it'll be very exciting to finally have those out in the world, but I really hope he doesn't hear them.

“I have a bad track record with relationships — not because of me, I’m a perfect angel. I’ve never done anything wrong — but I keep finding men who do not take it as seriously as I do” Wright told us. “Earlier on, like 17, 18, up to like, 20, you keep thinking ‘Oh, that was a fluke, so the next guy is going to be serious and he’s actually going to care — and they don’t. I’m learning that that’s the cycle, especially at this period of life where you’re in your early 20’s and everyone’s trying to figure out what they like. I’ve come to realize it’s not as bad as it comes across in this song, but in the moment, having gone through a breakup earlier that year [..] that’s kind of the basis of the song”

When it comes to writing these songs, the singer starts with ideas she’s already thought of. “Some people just start off with words or with music, but I usually have a melody and lyrics of some part of the song already just spawned in my brain.” She notes the catharsis of writing songs as a highlight for her during the process. "It's just a great way to come to terms with things that have happened, and even if no one ever hears it, I just like putting it out there, releasing that energy, and making something good out of it”.

Kayla Wright has been around music her whole life, growing up with an artist dad and watching Taylor Swift music videos on Music Choice, so it was only natural that she got to where she is today. “I just like, popped out, and I was a musical person I got up to senior year of high school, and was like, okay, I have to make a decision about what I’m going to do with the rest of my life — and the only thing that I could see myself doing and being happy about was making music.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, the pop star is a major influence on the singer. “Growing up listening to [Taylor Swift has] definitely influenced my writing style and has shown me that it’s okay to write about things that have happened to you. Those experiences are just as much yours as they are to the other person who is in that situation.” Other influences include Olivia Rodrigo (“I grew up listening to a lot of pop punk, so I love that she includes rock sounds in her music”), Jensen McCray (“Her writing is just so personal and so meaningful. I think she has such a beautiful way of turning those experiences into something so relatable”), and Megan Maroney (“She definitely got me back into country music.”).

Hopefully in the coming years, we’ll get to see more and more of Kayla Wright — that’s the plan, after all. “I will always write songs. I love writing songs. I definitely want to put more music out, it’s been so amazing connecting with people over [‘Settle Down’] and having my friends listen to it. I’m also a music industry major, so I’m four years into this degree and hopefully getting a job in the music industry so I can support other musicians and songwriters in getting the compensation they deserve for their work. I just hope to be immersed in music somehow.”
